The Back Story

About Us Historic Decorative Materials, a Division of Pavé Tile, Wood & Stone, Inc.

Would you believe that when I was 12 years old and living in Ohio, I wanted to marry a French guy, live in New England and go into import/export?  I would say this to my friends...and neither they nor I understood what even import/export really was.

Flash forward many...many years later...and my life curved exactly toward that direction.

Always having a passion for the French language, I obtained two masters degrees in Secondary Education French and French Literature and was teaching high school French in New England when François and I met.  I was also working on the weekends in a paint your own pottery studio and François had a tile shop across the street selling hand made tiles from Provence.  He had come just shy of 19 years old from Nice and grew into a self-made man establishing himself as a business owner.  Our first rencontre was "un coup de foudre" - and both of us simply felt we just knew each other.

Our shared interests in art, tile and France led us to marriage, children and opening Pavé Tile, Wood & Stone, Inc. in 2000.  With François, I was able to follow a second passion which was creating and using my artistic abilities in so many ways.  From designing and painting historic tile collections to designing our websites.  François' passion led him to create beautiful terra cotta tile and wood flooring as well as glazed ceramic tiles.  His meticulousness and discipline for his craft are on par with my own.  We love to use our hands and create, our preference being to live starving artists bohemian lives...but with three children...they do have to eat.

We would like our customers to know that we place art and beauty before trends. We have a passion for Western European history and design between the 14th - 19th centuries...don't ask me why and choose to be selective in our product offerings that fulfill our highest requirements in terms of authenticity and beauty.
