Eguisheim, a medieval village in Alsace, northeastern France, is famed for its timber-framed houses, cobbled lanes, and circular streets built around a 13th-century castle. For centuries, local homes, wineries, and farm buildings used terra cotta tiles made from Alsatian clay, prized for their durability and warm, earthy patina. Reclaimed tiles from this region carry the same artisanal character and lived history found throughout Eguisheim’s courtyards and historic architecture, bringing an authentic old-world aesthetic into modern interiors.
These reclaimed terra cotta tiles were salvaged from a 19th-century wine storage building on the outskirts of Eguisheim, a village long celebrated for its medieval charm and deep winemaking heritage. The structure once housed oak barrels from family vineyards that have operated in Alsace for generations. Over more than a century, the tiles absorbed the rhythms of daily work—the movement of vintners, the shifting of barrels, and the seasonal life of the vineyards.
Fired from local Alsatian clay, each tile holds the warm tones and textured patina characteristic of the region’s traditional craftsmanship. Their softly worn surfaces, subtle color variation, and hand-formed irregularities reflect decades of use in a building tied to Eguisheim’s agricultural and architectural history.
