Reclaimed French terra cotta floor tiles salvaged from a historic country home in Saint-Paul-de-Vence, Provence, this collection of antique hexagonal tomettes possesses an extraordinary range of natural clay colors and a beautifully developed, stone-like patina. At least 150 years old, these small-format French terra cotta tiles reflect the craftsmanship and material traditions of historic Provençal architecture.
Saint-Paul-de-Vence, a medieval fortified village overlooking the countryside of southern France, is celebrated for its winding cobblestone streets, ancient stone houses, and artistic heritage. Walking through its narrow passageways to the home where these tiles were reclaimed, we were struck by the similarity between the village's timeworn cobblestones and the diminutive hexagonal tiles we had come to salvage.
The colors are reminiscent of a field of Provençal wildflowers, though softened by generations of wear. Dusty lavender-gray, faded rose, muted terracotta, honey ochre, warm taupe, and pale limestone beige mingle with occasional deeper notes of umber and charcoal. Some tiles retain the warmth of their original fired clay, while others have developed a pale, almost chalky appearance. Together, these subtle contrasts create a richly varied floor with a remarkably harmonious overall character.
What distinguishes these reclaimed French terra cotta hexagons is their exceptional surface patina. The clay has acquired a smooth, almost stone-like finish, interrupted by delicate pits, mineral deposits, and traces of historic wear. Their gently rounded edges soften the geometry of the hexagonal pattern, while the consistency of their small proportions reveals the care with which these traditional French tomettes were originally fashioned.
The unusually small format offers particular architectural appeal. Unlike larger antique French terra cotta tiles, these diminutive hexagons create a finer, more intricate floor pattern, making them especially beautiful in powder rooms, primary bathrooms, intimate foyers, and French country kitchens. Their scale also allows them to complement the proportions of historic interiors without competing with surrounding architectural details.
For a particularly refined combination of historic materials, we envision these reclaimed French terra cotta floor tiles paired with Antiqued French Oak Floors - Sussex from our Great House Collection. The deeper warmth and grain of the French oak provide a beautiful counterpoint to the softly varied clay, recalling the understated material richness of traditional French country houses.
The beauty of this Saint-Paul-de-Vence collection lies in the balance between its precise hexagonal geometry and the irregularities acquired through time. Each tile contributes its own color and surface character, creating antique French flooring with the depth, individuality, and architectural permanence that make authentic reclaimed materials so desirable.
