Céreste-en-Luberon is located at the foot of the Luberon mountain range, between Forcalquier and Apt. A charming village surrounded by a breathtaking countryside - we were in awe at the antique stone paved streets that showcase original medieval stone homes from the 15th to the 18th century. Salvaging this lot of antique French terra cotta tile from an old grenier (attic) in the village is as charming as the village itself. There is an incredible surface texture that has a smooth patina from at least a century of wear. The variety of colors matches the clay roof tiles or tuilles on the rooftops of these historic homes - a mélange of dark and light clay colors, rose, olive, cream and burnt earth. The burnt tiles were fire-licked and historically prized, for it reveals how these tiles were made. Hand-molded then wood-fired in kilns at extremely hot temperatures - this beautiful color variation is due to the range of temperatures that is typical of wood-fired kilns. A perfect 7" x 7" x 3/4" tile means a tight grout line and a gorgeous installation.
