Reclaimed French Terra Cotta Hexagon Tile Salvaged from a Historic Sheep & Goat Farm

These reclaimed French terra cotta tiles were salvaged from an old sheep and goat farm situated along the Italian-French border, where the rural landscape is characterized by stone farm buildings, pastoral land and towering cypress trees. Originally laid in an agricultural barn used for raising sheep and goats, these antique terra cotta tiles carry the authentic surface wear, softened edges and remarkable tonal variation that can only develop through generations of use.

Handmade from natural clay and aged for more than a century, each reclaimed French terra cotta tile is individual. The hexagonal tiles reveal a beautifully varied palette of faded terracotta, dusty rose, warm salmon, pale ochre, chalky cream and softly weathered earth tones. Variations in firing, clay composition, age and wear create a floor with depth and movement rather than the uniform appearance of newly manufactured terra cotta.

For European-inspired interior design, reclaimed French terra cotta brings an architectural material into the home that is both rustic and refined. These antique hexagon tiles are particularly suited to French country interiors, Provençal interiors, Mediterranean interior design, old-world kitchens, European farmhouse interiors, entry halls, mudrooms, wine rooms and historic home renovations. Paired with French oak flooring, natural limestone, lime plaster, aged timber and other authentic materials, the warm clay tones introduce texture and patina while allowing the architecture and furnishings to remain central to the room.

The irregularity is intrinsic to the beauty of authentic reclaimed French terra cotta tiles. Worn faces, softened corners, slight differences in dimension and centuries-old surface markings are evidence of the tiles' handmade manufacture and former life. Rather than attempting to reproduce the appearance of an old European floor, these are genuine antique French terra cotta tiles reclaimed from an agricultural building and preserved for a new generation of interiors.

At Historic Decorative Materials, we select reclaimed European materials for their architectural authenticity, provenance and ability to contribute genuine age to contemporary and traditional interior design. This Italian-French border collection offers the unmistakable warmth and patina of an old terra cotta floor while preserving the history of the rural building from which it was reclaimed.
