The Following Characteristics of Historic Decorative Materials Zellige Tiles are not considered defects:

 USAGE GUIDE BODY

L'Art de Fez Authentic Hand Cut Moroccan Zellige Tiles are 100% hand made terra cotta clay Zellige tiles from Fez, Morocco. Due to the nature of this hand made terra cotta Zellige tile, each Zellige will be unique. The following characteristics may be inherent in your Zellige tile and will not be considered defects:

1. Dimples in the Face of the Zellige Glaze Tile

2. Tiny Cracks, Chips and Dimples in the Zellige Glaze Surface

3. Variation in Zellige Grout Line Widths

4. Variation of Zellige Glaze Colors due to Kiln Firing

5. Exposed Clay beneath the Zellige Tile Glaze

6. Imperfections of the Zellige Tile Face

7. Each Tile from a Zellige Color Family will have a Variation of Color, Tone and Hue. Images and samples don’t represent final Zellige tile received. 

8. High and Low Edges of the Zellige Tile. Spacing of a Zellige installation should be at least 3/64” 

9. Ink or pen on the glaze Zellige tile surface.

10. Uneven or inconsistent thickness of each Zellige tile 

11. Shade variations are inherent in all kiln fired clay products.

Please avoid the use of abrasive products containing bleach, ammonia and/or paint thinner when cleaning a Zellige installation. We suggest Savon Noir Black Soap and a warm sponge.  Never scrub with rough materials that may damage the surface of your Zellige tile installation. Zellige tiles are intended for indoor use only. The client accepts that as these are a man made product, each tile is different from the next. Shade variations are inherent in all kiln fired clay products. We do not recommend Zellige tiles for use as a floor finish in high traffic commercial and public external spaces. Our tiles are hand made and will patina with age.

WET APPLICATIONS

Zellige tiles are suitable for use in shower walls and floors, steam showers, saunas. Using our Moroccan handmade zellige tiles in a submerged water application such as a pool, fountain or water line, is to be at the discretion of the client. It is recommended to prepare the surface with a waterproof membrane. Historic Decorative Materials will not be responsible for material failures resulting from use over a damaged, defective or improperly prepared surface and cannot be held responsible for replacement of tile used in areas with complete water submersion including, but not limited to pools and fountains. We recommend an additional layer of sealant to the surface of the Zellige tiles to prevent damage. Tiles should be retreated/re-sealed each year. Tiles should not be laid in areas (internal or external) that reach freezing temperatures for lengthy periods of time. Historic Decorative Materials will not be responsible for material failures resulting from freeze thaw, and failure of tile by water damage in these circumstances. We take no responsibility for damages caused to our tiles due to improper and faulty installation methods. This includes but is not limited to the following: unleveled substrate causing the tiles to crack due to movement,  unsealed substrate causing moisture from beneath the tiles to reach the clay biscuit of the tile, incorrect use of sealant type, incorrect usage of glue type. 

USE ON COUNTERTOPS

The use of Zellige tiles on kitchen countertops or working surfaces is acceptable, however should be at the discretion of the client. Historic Decorative Materials will not take responsibility for effects due to the acidity of liquid spills, and/or excessive heat from cooking utensils damaging the surface of the Zellige tiles. Clients must also take into consideration that these tiles are not flat surfaces and crevices in certain mosaic selections may be impractical for bench-top surfaces.

SHIPMENT INSPECTION

It is the responsibility of the client or client’s representatives to thoroughly inspect deliveries upon receipt. It is important to check that received tiles match what was ordered and that nothing was damaged. All damage claims must be made the day of receiving the tiles and filed with the shipper.  Historic Decorative Materials will not accept any claims of wrong tiles, will take no responsibility for tiles not inspected the day of receiving the tiles and installed after a 3 day inspection period.  Historic Decorative Materials will not accept complaints after the 3 day final inspection period.

SEALING OF TILES

After installation, all Zellige tiles should be sealed. Before use of any sealant, always read the product directions and carry-out a test on un-laid pieces or in an inconspicuous area to determine desired effect and ease of application. 

CLEANING/MAINTENANCE of Zellige Tiles

Do not use any harsh abrasive cleaners Zellige tiles. Please use a natural stone cleaner or Savon Noir Black Soap to clean Zellige tile installations. Regular normal maintenance cleaning is recommended using an appropriate pH-neutral cleaner (e.g. cleaners ordinarily suitable for natural stone & terrazzo floors). Never use abrasive cleaners, chemicals or bleach as over time these may affect the natural color pigments of the tiles’ surface. Before use of any cleaner, always read the product directions and carry-out a test clean on some un-laid pieces or in an inconspicuous area to determine desired effect and ease of application. Historic Decorative Materials take no responsibility to Zellige damage caused by the client using abrasive cleaners, scouring pads and other strong cleaning products. 

Once purchased and Zellige tiles received, there will be no returns or refunds.

Historic Decorative Materials will not take responsibility for any breakages/damages of Zellige tile after the order has been delivered in good condition. Historic Decorative Materials are direct importers of Zellige tile from Fez, Morocco. We take no responsibility in the incorrect calculations of an order.  It is up to the client to order correct quantity. Historic Decorative Materials recommends placing a minimum addition of 10-15% overage for each order.
