Throughout the medieval villages of southwestern France, limestone has shaped the region's architecture for centuries. From the fortified bastides of Périgord and Quercy to the vineyards and villages of the Lot Valley, native limestone formed the walls, churches, farmhouses, manor homes, and enduring stone floors that remain the architectural foundation of daily life.
Unlike the monumental dalles found within the grand halls of abbeys and châteaux, the smaller dallettes became the practical flooring of provincial France. Their more intimate proportions allowed stone masons to adapt gracefully to the irregular rooms, thick masonry walls, narrow passages, and evolving floor plans characteristic of medieval homes. They were traditionally laid throughout kitchens, entrance halls, family dining rooms, wine cellars, bakeries, galleries, and the everyday living spaces where generations of life quietly unfolded.
Artisanally crafted in France using traditional stone masonry techniques inspired by centuries of regional craftsmanship, Les Dallettes du Sud-Ouest faithfully recreates the appearance of these historic limestone floors. Rich fossilization, softened edges, subtle pitting, delicate veining, and a naturally weathered patina evoke the quiet beauty of stone gently worn by generations of footsteps.
Designed for both flooring and wall cladding, Les Dallettes du Sud-Ouest are equally suited to kitchens, mudrooms, entry halls, wine rooms, sculleries, pantries, bathrooms, great rooms, garden rooms, fireplaces, feature walls, and covered outdoor living spaces. The deepest and most richly antiqued limestone within the collection, Sarlat draws inspiration from the timeless limestone architecture of Sarlat-la-Canéda, the celebrated medieval town at the heart of France's historic Périgord Noir. Deep weathered taupe, softened olive-gray, and mineral undertones are enriched by abundant fossilization, gentle pitting, and a beautifully matured patina reminiscent of centuries-old stone floors worn smooth by generations of daily life.
