Hand-painted English Gothic ceramic wall tile inspired by 14th-century encaustic tile traditions, the Pinwheel is an original geometric design within the Carriage House Collection by Historic Decorative Materials. Its rotating ornamental pattern draws upon the balanced geometry and interlocking forms of medieval English tilework, where repeating designs brought movement and architectural rhythm to Gothic interiors.
Originally interpreted and painted by Emmi Micallef, co-founder of Historic Decorative Materials, the Pinwheel motif is rendered in Medieval Grey, a muted warm grey, against a Vintage Warm White ceramic field. Each tile is individually hand-painted and kiln-fired, with a delicately crackled glaze that recalls the aged surfaces of historic English decorative ceramics.
The Pinwheel's geometric composition lends itself to repeating tile installations, creating a continuous decorative pattern across fireplace surrounds, kitchen backsplashes, bathroom walls, and architectural panels. Designed to coordinate with the Carriage House Collection's complementary motifs, borders, and moldings, these English Gothic ceramic wall tiles pair beautifully with antiqued French oak, reclaimed limestone, Belgian bluestone, and interiors influenced by traditional English architecture.
