Ceramic artists try and recreate the admired flashing that is found on this beautiful lot of French reclaimed terra cotta tile hexagons.  The flashing - or the black burnt marks, can occur in classic wood firings of terra cotta where a thermal history of variations in flame produces signature black formations.  Hand made terra cotta tiles form 150 years ago were fired in wood-burning kilns, and depending on the material (terra cotta) and the nature of the fuel (wood) used in firing - these flashings forever mark the terra cotta.  These are cherished for their historic contexts and ceramic artists today try and reproduce this look on their earthenware pottery.  In the end, the degree to which flashing appears in the ware is attributed to the mystique of the process.  The flashings + the burnt reds of the reclaimed terra cotta tile hexagons makes for a handsome and authentic floor.
